Hawai
is a wonderful and talented bunch from Kortrijk, Belgium. This
5-piece – led by songwriter Kurt Debrabandere – features members
of a.o. Galatasaray, Gèsman and Two Russian Cowboys.
Hawai was formed out of the ashes of Chiva Con Poza (a hard
pop swinging blues core band) and has been around for about
5 years now. The band built up an excellent live reputation
before recording a long awaited debut album in 2004. 'Gone in
a minute/the never changing bits' (Radical Pigeon Recordings)
truly was a refreshing experience. The music was a mixture of
catchy instrumentals and experimental rock, often winking at
jazz, funk, film scores and avant-garde. "An album that sounds
like a David Lynch soundtrack, holding arms with Kiss My Jazz...
It takes less to become wildly enthusiastic." (RifRaf Musiczine)
Both critics and fans embraced the album. The single 'Smoke
It Off' received decent airplay on Belgium's alternative radio
stations and Hawai played some brilliant live shows. In the
meantime, the boys built their own rehearsal space and their
label, Radical Pigeon Recordings, granted us fine releases of
Gèsman and Galatasaray.
Now Hawai is back for more!
On the new record, entitled 'Keep The Wild Nudes Ahead', the
band shows clear growth: a more mature, tighter sound, and vocals
on almost every song. It’s still genuine Hawai though: eclectic
vs. poppy, fresh vs. freaky. Once again, the album is recorded
& produced by Filip Tanghe. It's mastered at Electric City (Brussels)
by Vince T. (Amenra, Hitch, Officer Jones AHPCP). Vlas Vegas
Records (Galatasaray, Hitch) releases the CD and vinyl and Bang!
sees to the distribution in the Benelux. 'Keep The Wild Nudes
Ahead' is part 2 of a fascinating story. Give it a try, you
won't regret it!
Like the records, the Hawai live shows are a trip. "A smoky
bar, a glass of absinthe close at hand. And five minutes later
we have passed the Caribbean, Siberia and the hurricane Charlie."
(Belpop.com) Expect to be amazed by goofy rhythms and melodies
and to be kicked in the nuts all in one song. |
